Low-Impact, Dynamic and Highly Adaptable–El Dorado's Portland Office!
View MoreLessThe Eldo_PDX office is a straightforward yet ephemeral re-work of an existing warehouse space. The building is a single story barrel truss structure; a typology that can be found dispersed around the historic Pearl District of Portland, OR. El Dorado was looking for a new space during the COVID pandemic and approached the renovation with care, not fully understanding at the time how the pandemic would affect in-person work or future needs for expansion. The approach to the space was to outfit the 3 available bays of the structure with a multi-layered gridded curtain system that avoids more intensive, permanent interventions and allows for flexible reconfiguring; as well as cost-control. An all white color palette emphasize the uniquely painted concrete floor (it was previously an Aikido Dojo). The curtains give a softness to the otherwise utilitarian structure and allow the space to be reconfigured. The curtains are comprised of a heavy box pleated layer with sound attenuating properties and a shear layer that creates additional layering potential. The pull rope of the curtains is a subtle nod to a rope manufacturer that once called the space home. The low-impact vision was completed with the addition of El Dorado designed and fabricated furniture. The custom furniture adds a layer of warmth (and future moveabillity) to the spare interior.
