Reimagining STEM education and igniting environmental stewardship across Tennessee.
View MoreLessTennessee 4-H, administered by the University of Tennessee Extension, empowers youth from diverse backgrounds to develop their unique skills and talents. The program equips youth for success in the workplace and ignites passions for civic engagement. With 4-H centers across the state and an extension office in every county, Tennessee 4-H has impacted the lives of over four million youth since its inception. Building on the success of the previously-completed STEM Center at Lone Oaks Farm, El Dorado developed a programming document for STEM Centers at the remaining three 4-H and Youth Development Centers in Tennessee. The programming document not only detailed the necessary spaces for each project and systems required, but also set an ambitious tone for the future of 4-H youth education in Tennessee. It was informed by lessons learned, both positive and negative, from working in the areas of youth education and development in rural settings. Unique to this programming effort, El Dorado partnered with horticulturalist Carol Reese to reimagine landscapes as more than just ornamental features or sources of shade. Our collective vision emphasizes using the STEM Center landscapes as educational tools that inspire exploration of careers in agriculture and environmental stewardship. The document reflects the story of each site's unique geology, tracing its influence on soil formation, native flora and fauna, and how these elements have evolved over planetary time, including the more recent impacts of human settlement and land use.
