Parrott Creek Child and Family Services

A dignified and calming retreat for troubled youth, underpinned by the principles of Trauma-Informed Design.

Since 1968, Parrott Creek has been rebuilding the lives of highly traumatized children and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. Parrott Creek combines evidence-based and trauma-informed treatment models with restorative justice and mindfulness to help individuals become aware of past and current behaviors, and develop tools to make concrete changes. Parrott Creek's 80-acre property is located in rural Clackamas County, outside the Portland Metro region. The site includes a meadow, wetland, creek and a coniferous forest. The site was previously a farmstead with the farmhouse as the last existing building from that era. An orchard occupied the north portion of the site with cherries, apples, and other fruits. The oldest trees are believed to be about 80 years old. Native salmon, stinging nettle and camas were once plentiful and harvested for food and medicinal uses. Trauma-Informed Design teaches that there is a profound importance to blended spaces by layering and creating gradients between inside and outside, loud and quiet, public and private, group and individual, very much like the front porch of a home. We propose "Porch Space" as a seed idea: Applying the idea of porch space to Parrott Creek would provide a wealth of safe, comfortable, and informal spaces each with its own character and special qualities to create familiarity, identity, and connections to the place and nature. The porch is a space of connection - to each other and to the larger world.
